The number must be written down and taken with you to the station - the machine prints a paper ticket based on it. Such tickets are available, for example, for Eurostar or TGV trains, currently only in France, although the number of stations with machines is increasing - they will soon be available in other countries. The TOD ticket must be printed at least 30 minutes before travel.
