Everything you need to know about Trenitalia
Trenitalia is Italy's national rail operator and one of the largest passenger transport operators in Europe. The company is part of the state-owned Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group and is responsible for operating most of the country's rail links, from super-fast routes between major metropolitan areas to regional lines connecting smaller cities, seaside resorts and mountainous regions.
Trenitalia's network forms the backbone of Italy's transport system, enabling efficient travel for both residents and tourists moving between the country's major centres.
The operator operates different categories of trains adapted to the length of the route and the needs of passengers, including:
- Frecciarossa high-speed trainsets,
- long-distance Intercity connections,
- regional trains.
Trenitalia also operates international connections, integrating the Italian rail network into the European system and collaborating with other carriers in common rules for cross-border travel. Thanks to a uniform ticketing system and an extensive fare offer, it is possible to plan both short local journeys and complex journeys involving several countries.
Trenitalia 3-day ticket. How does it work and who can use it?
The Trenitalia Italia in Tour 3 -day tickets are a special offer from Trenitalia designed for people who want to explore Italy intensively in a short period of time, without having to buy separate tickets for each journey.
For a one-off fee of €35, the passenger receives unlimited travel for 3 consecutive days on all Trenitalia regional trains and Trenitalia Tper (Emilia-Romagna region) in second class. This includes, among others:
- Regionale trains,
- high-speed regional connections,
- agglomeration transport,
- the popular Leonardo Express connecting the centre of Rome with Fiumicino Airport.
The traveller can move freely between cities without having to plan the cost of the journey each time.
The offer has been designed mainly for tourists visiting Italy, participants in religious or cultural events and people planning a round trip through several regions of the country.
What should you know about the Trenitalia 3-day ticket?
The Trenitalia 3-day ticket is personal and non-transferable, and its validity period can be changed any number of times until 23:59 of the day before the start of the journey, up to a maximum of six months after purchase.
Please note that the promotion is only valid on regional trains and does not apply to selected special routes or connections operated by other carriers. It is best for quietly exploring cities, towns and regions outside the high-speed rail network.
Trenitalia 5-day ticket - ideal for tourists and travellers
An extended version of the offer is Italia in Tour 5, a ticket allowing unlimited travel for 5 consecutive days for €59. This is particularly attractive for those planning a longer stay in Italy, who want to see more than one city or region without incurring high transport costs.
Trenitalia's 5-day ticket means you can travel freely between popular tourist destinations, historic towns or coastal regions using a dense network of regional train connections. The 'travel as much as you want' model allows you to change your travel plans spontaneously and react to the weather, local events or your individual pace of sightseeing.
The Trenitalia 5-day ticket will be appreciated by travellers who prefer a slower, more authentic experience of Italy - regional trains also stop in smaller towns inaccessible to high-speed trainsets.
What do I need to know about the 5-day ticket on Trenitalia?
Like the three-day variant, the offer remains flexible in terms of the start date, which can be changed up to the day before the ticket is activated with Trenitalia. The lack of the possibility to return or change class is compensated by a very favourable price in relation to the number of journeys, making Italia in Tour 5 one of the most cost-effective ways to explore the country by regional rail.
Is it possible to buy a weekly train ticket at Trenitalia?
Trenitalia offers the equivalent of a weekly ticket in the form of the Trenitalia Pass, a special rail pass designed for tourists living outside Italy.
The Trenitalia Pass season ticket allows you to travel around the country multiple times within a certain period of time without having to buy a separate ticket for each journey. Depending on the variant chosen, 3 or 4 journeys can be made over 7 consecutive days. In practice, the Pass acts as a flexible weekly ticket, which is useful when touring Italy.
The Trenitalia Pass covers travel on trains:
- Frecciarossa,
- Frecciargento,
- Frecciabianca (Frecce),
- Intercity,
- Intercity Night,
- EuroCity on domestic routes.
This season ticket on Trenitalia allows you to connect Italy's major cities by high-speed rail transport. The validity period starts from the first seat reservation and all days are counted consecutively.
Each journey booked, including those with transfers, is treated as one Passu journey. There are two comfort levels to choose from: Easy and Comfort, and prices depend on the number of journeys and the passenger category (Adult, Senior, Youth).
Note: The Trenitalia Pass also gives you the option of purchasing a 15 or 30-day ticket.

How long is the validity period of a Trenitalia ticket?
The validity period of a Trenitalia ticket depends mainly on the type of train and the type of fare purchased - the Italian carrier applies different rules for high-speed and regional trains.
👉For Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and Intercity Notte trains, the ticket is only valid for the specific train, date and time indicated at the time of booking. This means that the passenger must travel on the exact service indicated, unless the fare conditions (e.g. Base) allow the booking to be changed beforehand.
👉The situation is different for regional trains**(Regionale and Regionale Veloce**). Trenitalia's online ticket remains valid for 24 hours from the scheduled departure time, and you can start your journey on any train on the selected route during this time.
👉For special offers such as the Trenitalia Pass or Italia in Tour, validity is calculated from the date of activation or first booking and covers a certain number of consecutive calendar days (e.g. 3, 5, 7, 15 or 30 days depending on the variant).
It is advisable to check the terms and conditions of the specific fare before purchase, as this determines the flexibility and duration of the Trenitalia ticket.

Why travel with Trenitalia trains?

The railways allow you to plan your route quickly and flexibly, without having to worry about traffic jams, car parks or traffic restrictions in historic city centres. The extensive network of connections makes it possible to reach not only the largest metropolises such as Rome, Milan or Florence, but also smaller towns, seaside resorts and medieval villages, which often remain more difficult to reach by other means of transport.
Another important advantage of the railway is the comfort of the journey and its ecological nature.
