What does the Quiet Zone mean on the train?

The Quiet Zone on the train is a specially designated carriage where passengers who value peace and quiet can travel. In this part of the train, you will not experience the phone calls of other passengers or the sounds of electronic devices. Instead, you will have the peace and quiet you need to read a book, work, relax or take a short nap.

The Zone of Silence car is a service introduced by PKP Intercity in 2016 on Express InterCity Premium (Pendolino) trains. Due to its growing popularity, the Zone of Silence also appeared as a pilot programme on InterCity trains in September 2022. The high level of interest in IC meant that here, too, the Quiet Zone carriage became a permanent part of the carrier's offering.

What rules apply in the Zone of Silence?

Those who choose to travel in this type of compartment should, above all, avoid conversations both on the telephone and with other passengers. In exceptional situations, you may communicate with fellow travellers in a whisper, other conversations should be postponed or you should leave the carriage. Conversations are not prohibited, for example in the WARS restaurant carriage, where you can go for a delicious meal and have a chat at the same time.

You are also not allowed to listen to music loudly in the Quiet Zone. If you want to listen to your favourite tunes, put on your headphones and turn up the playback to a quieter level. The same applies to watching films, playing games or other sounds from laptops and mobile devices. It is best to mute the sounds or use headphones so as not to disturb others.

Itis also better to refrain from eating in this carriage. This is so that no rustling or gurgling will disturb the other passengers. If you want to eat a meal, go to the catering carriage.

The PKP Quiet Zone will therefore be a suitable choice for:

  • people who are tired or irritated by intense sounds,

  • people who want to study or work and who want to concentrate as much as possible on the task at hand,

  • Those who appreciate quiet and a peaceful journey,

  • people planning a business trip,

  • elderly people who react badly to noise,

  • people on the autism spectrum,

  • people who are hypersensitive to sounds or have sensory impairments.

Advantages and disadvantages of a quiet zone on board trains

The advantages include, above all:

  • comfort on journeys for those working, studying or studying,

  • conditions conducive to concentration and relaxation,

  • a pleasant atmosphere in the carriage for those in need of quiet,

  • absence of intense noise,

  • the opportunity to read your favourite novels away from the noise.

The Zone of Silence also has its disadvantages, among them:

  • limited availability of seats, they are usually only in one carriage on the train,

  • a lack of flexibility - people who even once urgently need to answer the phone have to do so outside the compartment,

  • the possibility of not following the rules - sometimes parents with young children or people who are not familiar with the rules accidentally end up in the Quiet Zone.

Remember that due to the small number of seats, it is advisable to buy this type of ticket in advance. Has the availability of the Zone of Silence convinced you to plan a business trip on the PKP? Check out our guide, which will take you a little closer to the subject!

Quiet zone on IC trains

Intercity's Quiet Zone is an offer introduced a little later than the Pendolino quiet car. However, the popularity of this compartment in IC is just as high. Currently, the Quiet Zone is only found on PesaDart and Flirt trains. However, it does not cover the whole carriage, but only a separate part of it in carriage 8. Depending on the type of train, 32 or 20 seats in the Quiet Zone are available for travellers, respectively.

The Quiet Zone is only available on selected trains. You will find out whether it is available on a particular train when you search for a connection in PolishTrains. When booking tickets, you will find this information when selecting a seat from the seat map - seats in the Quiet Zone are marked with a crossed-out loudspeaker symbol.
