Sleeping car at PKP Intercity - key information

A PKP Intercity sleeping car is a special type of passenger carriage, designed for overnight journeys - passengers can sleep in them during the journey. From the outside, it is usually distinguished by its colour - sleeping cars are dark blue and marked with inscriptions above the windows. This is where you will find the information "sleeping car" and its equivalents in other languages ("schlafwagen", "voiture-lits", "sleeping car" and "carrozza letti").

What does a sleeping car look like on Intercity? Most have 10 compartments (with the exception of car 308A equipped with eight ordinary compartments and one for people with disabilities). Their interior is divided into lockable compartments - usually single, double or triple (depending on the variant: Single, Double, Triple), which are equipped with reclining beds.

At the end of the sleeping car you will find a compartment for the escort (steward), and some car models are also equipped with a public shower.

In each compartment of the sleeper car there is a folding washbasin hidden under a shelf and next to it a small cupboard with a mirror, where the staff prepare a hygiene kit (towel, soap) and a small snack in the form of water, juice and a sweet snack before the journey. Clothes hangers are also provided for passengers to help keep the small space tidy.

A sturdy folding ladder leads to the upper beds, and near the door there is a control panel that allows passengers to adjust the comfort of the compartment to their own liking, adjusting the heating or air conditioning, adjusting the volume of announcements and switching the lighting on or off. There is also a button on the panel to summon the steward, who will provide assistance or refreshments if required.

For a more comfortable journey, each bed has a separate reading lamp, so that you can use the spotlight without disturbing your fellow passengers. More modern carriages also have 230 V sockets, allowing you to charge your phone, laptop or other electronic devices during the journey.
