Spanish Railways Renfe
Renfe Operadora is a state-owned company founded in 2005 as a result of reforms in the Spanish rail sector, but its history dates back to 1941, when the original RENFE (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) network was established. Today, the company manages all the main passenger routes in Spain, with the infrastructure belonging to a separate entity, ADIF. Thanks to this structure, Renfe's trains operate on national and international routes with a high degree of operational independence, cooperating with other European operators.
The Spanish operator operates four main transport segments:
Renfe AVE - high-speed high-speed rail, reaching up to 350 km/h,
Renfe Alvia - trains connecting high-speed lines with standard tracks,
Renfe Avant - regional express services,
Cercanías - suburban railways in major conurbations, including Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.
The development of AVE connections has made it possible to reduce travel times between Spain's major cities to a level comparable to domestic flights. The Madrid-Barcelona route today takes less than 2 hours 30 minutes, and a trip to Valencia or Seville takes just 1.5-2 hours.
Renfe trains
Several classes of travel are available on Renfe trains, which vary in terms of service, space and seat comfort. The most popular are Turista, Preferente and Club, and on overnight routes, Litera and Gran Clase.
● The Turista class corresponds to second class - offering comfortable, adjustable seats, electrical sockets and space for luggage. It is the most frequently chosen option by passengers travelling in Spain.
● In Preferente Class (first class), travellers can expect wider seats, more legroom and table service.
● An even higher level of comfort is provided by Club Class, often referred to as Business Class - the seats are fully reclining and passengers are offered catering service and personalised service.
The Turista Plus category - intermediate between Turista and Preferente - is also appearing on selected high-speed services, including AVE trains. It offers higher standard seating like first class, but without additional services such as catering.
On Renfe night trains, meanwhile, there are Litera carriages (couchettes with reclining seats) and Gran Clase, which are full-size bedrooms offering privacy and high sleeping comfort. With such a wide choice, passengers can easily match the standard of travel to their needs - whether it is a short domestic route or an overnight journey between Spanish cities.
Renfe train paths
The Renfe network covers more than 18,000 kilometres of track, of which more than 3,000 kilometres is AVE high-speed infrastructure.
● Madrid - Barcelona,
● Madrid - Valencia,
● Madrid - Seville,
● Madrid - Alicante,
● Barcelona - Malaga,
● Madrid - Zaragoza,
● Valencia - Murcia.
In addition to domestic connections, Renfe also operates international destinations, including Madrid - Marseille or Barcelona - Lyon. Renfe's proposed timetable also includes other international stops, including Portugal.
Frequency of connections and journey times
Renfe trains run with very high frequency, especially on the AVE routes. There are up to 25 pairs of trains a day between Madrid and Barcelona, and more than a dozen services a day on the Madrid-Valencia section. The long-distance network also includes regular evening and night services, allowing people to reach their destination without having to spend the night in a hotel.
On the shorter regional and suburban routes, trains run every 30-60 minutes, providing a fast and environmentally friendly way of getting around major conurbations. Renfe has become the main alternative to car and air travel in Spain thanks to its high punctuality and short journey times.
What train tickets does Renfe offer?
On Renfe trains, tickets come in three main fares, which differ in the range of services. This allows each passenger to choose the option best suited to the destination and nature of the journey. Tickets can be purchased as early as 80 days before the departure date. This makes planning much more convenient.
Básico
This is the basic, cheapest fare for those with a fixed departure plan. It does not include the option to return or change your travel dates. The ticket price allows you to take up to three pieces of luggage with a total weight of up to 25 kg. Seats are assigned to Turista class, or second class.
Elige Estándar
Provides more freedom - you can change your travel dates once free of charge and get a 70% refund of the ticket value upon cancellation. Paid extras are also available, such as seat selection, travel with a pet or the Superflex package with full refund.
Elige Confort
This is a higher standard in economy class including one free ticket exchange and up to 70% refund upon cancellation. Wide XL seats make this option ideal for those who value comfort.
Prémium
This is the most comprehensive ticket - it includes XL seats, full refund, unlimited date changes, food and beverage service and all available amenities. It is an option for passengers who want maximum comfort and flexibility.
This breakdown of fares allows Renfe passengers to tailor their journey to their expectations - from an economical journey in Turista class to a comfortable journey with more space and additional amenities.
Discounts and special offers
Spanish rail operator Renfe offers a wide system of discounts to make travel more accessible for different groups of passengers. Discounts range from children, young people, senior citizens to families or organised groups.
Children up to the age of 14 can travel 40% cheaper, and toddlers not occupying separate seats ride for free.
Young passengers aged between 14 and 25 can enjoy a 30% discount.
Seniors over 60 can expect discounts of up to 40% under the scheme, making long-haul travel significantly cheaper.
ISIC, EYCA and IYTC cardholders, meanwhile, can benefit from a 20% discount on Avant, Media Distancia y Regionales trains and a 5% discount on Ave or Larga Distancia trains.
On the other hand, families with many children gain favourable conditions for the purchase of tickets, regardless of whether they travel together or separately - they can gain up to a 50% discount.

With such an extensive discount system, Renfe Spanish Rail remains competitively priced while offering a high standard of travel in every class.
Renfe in Poland
Renfe trains do not run directly on Polish tracks, but tickets for their connections can easily be purchased from the PolishTrains service. This allows passengers from Poland to plan their journey around Spain in Polish, with the possibility of payment in zloty and full support from advisors. The whole process is simple and intuitive - just choose your route, class of travel and a convenient date. If necessary, you can use the PolishTrains helpline, which helps with changes, ticket refunds or payment problems.
However, Renfe is not only about domestic connections in Spain. The carrier cooperates with the French railway SNCF, making direct international travel possible, for example from Barcelona to Marseille, Lyon or Paris. This solution is particularly appreciated by travellers who want to visit southern Europe, connecting the Spanish coast with the most beautiful cities of France. Thanks to the PolishTrains offer, planning such an itinerary is simple, transparent and fully accessible in one place.
