Intercity Wi-Fi and connection security
The Wi-Fi connection on Intercity trains is encrypted and protected by an SSL certificate. However, it is a public network. For this reason, the carrier recommends that you do not log on to sensitive services such as online banking or portals containing sensitive data.
Frequent train travellers may want to consider using a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, which encrypts transmitted data, increasing security on the network. This is recommended especially for those who work while using public Wi-Fi networks.
How does Wi-Fi work at Intercity?
PKP Intercity uses LTE and 5G technologies - these automatically connect to the base station of the operator that has the strongest signal. This ensures the continuity of the network regardless of the conditions. The router on the train further distributes the signal to all passengers connected to the network.
The average speed of the connection on the trains allows passengers to browse the internet, use maps, mail and even watch films with ease. When there are a lot of people using the Wi-Fi network at the same time, the speed can drop slightly. Therefore, on trains with a large number of carriages, we can expect the internet to work slightly slower.
When does Wi-Fi not work on Intercity?
Although most depots are equipped with modern routers, working in the mode of aggregation of several mobile network links, there are situations where the connection is not available. This can be affected by:
- poor coverage on the route - such problems usually occur in tunnels or forest sections where there is a lot of tree cover.
- router - there are situations where the connection is blocked by a router that has crashed. If this is the case, it will need to be reset - this request should be made to the train crew.
If the train is equipped with a Wi-Fi network and, despite a reboot of the router, there is still no connection to the Internet, this can be reported via the online form on the carrier's website or the infoline.
