Monuments of Gorzów Wielkopolski - see our list

Gorzów impresses with its variety of styles and unique atmosphere. Each of its historic sites is not only a fragment of history, but also a unique element of the landscape, which allows you to better understand the culture and tradition of the region. If you want to feel the spirit of the past and move back in time, be sure to see the most beautiful monuments of Gorzów Wielkopolski - we are sure they will enchant you! What is worth seeing and discovering here?

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest monument in Gorzów Wielkopolski - it dates back to the 13th century. This impressive red-brick Gothic church dominates the Old Market Square and is an unwritten symbol of the city. The interior impresses above all with the Renaissance-Mannerist main altar in the form of a triptych from around 1600. It depicts the scenes of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, as well as the image of Jonah in the mouth of the whale. Gorzów Cathedral has the largest organ in the region, consisting of 2,300 pipes, as well as 4 bells.

Walls

The remains of the medieval defensive walls of Gorzów Wielkopolski are a fascinating relic of the city's past. Their construction began in the 1420s, replacing the earlier wooden and earth fortifications. A fragment of about 130 metres in length, located on Zabytkowa Street, has been preserved to this day.

Walking along these walls, you can feel the atmosphere of the old times and read information about how the city successfully defended itself against invaders over the years. This is another of Gorzów's attractions, which you can "tick off" on your way from the railway station to the city centre (it is about a quarter of an hour's walk).

Spichlerz

The Granary is a historic building from the 18th century, currently serving as a branch of the Jan Dekert Lubuski Museum, which we have already described. Located at 1-3 Fabryczna Street, it is an important point on the cultural map of Gorzów. It hosts temporary exhibitions and permanent exhibitions on the history of the region. It is about one kilometre from the railway station, so a 15-minute walk is enough to get here straight from the train.

Why do we devote a special place on our list to this building? Because it is an interesting building that you absolutely must see for yourself. In the three-storey half-timbered building (a fantastic example of perfectly preserved half-timbering!), you can see, among other things, a model of the city from the first half of the 17th century and the remains of the Gothic town hall excavated during archaeological work in the Old Market Square.

One of the most important attractions of Gorzów can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00. On Fridays, entry is free of charge, on other days you will pay 18 PLN (regular ticket) or 12 PLN (discounted ticket). Tickets for the temporary exhibitions cost 12 zł and 8 zł respectively.

Paucksch Villa

Monuments? Gorzów Wielkopolski has plenty of them! One example is the Paucksch Villa, an imposing residence from the late 19th century which once belonged to the well-known Gorzów industrialist Hermann Paucksch. It is one of the impressive factory residences of the former Landsberg, along with the palace of the bishops of Gorzow (Max Bahr's villa), the wedding palace (Carl Bahr's villa), Lehmann's villa (Herbert Library) or Schroeder's villa, which today houses the Lubuskie Museum.

The building, located at 36 Wal Okrajny Street, was built in the spirit of the late Italian Renaissance, for which elegant villas with a corner tower are characteristic. In its surroundings, a cordegarden (outbuilding) has been preserved, as well as the remains of the former garden layout with valuable old trees.

Until 2014, the Grodzki Dom Kultury operated here, attracting interest with its legendary interior decoration, including fairy-tale ceilings. In 2023, a private investor began a major renovation of the villa to adapt the historic interiors for a new function - a conference and restaurant centre is to be built here.

The Witches' Well

In a city with such an interesting history as Gorzów Wielkopolski, monuments are not only churches and villas. One of the most interesting attractions is also the Witches' Well - a place shrouded in legends related to medieval trials of women accused of witchcraft. According to one story, in the middle of the 16th century, a distraught mother of three beautiful girls who did not want to marry died here by suicide, and as a result was accused of being a witch and set on fire at the stake.

Located in the Old Market Square, the well is an interesting spot for lovers of history and mysterious stories. It originally stood in the courtyard of the New Town Hall on Obotrycka Street, but was destroyed during the Second World War. The object, reconstructed by Gorzów artist Zofia Bilińska, was placed on the Woolen Market Square in 1997. Are you ready to check if you can actually see a woman's face in the well?
