2. ZAKOPANE - WHAT TO SEE IN ONE DAY?
When getting off the train, it is worth stopping at📍 Zakopane railway station to learn more about the history of the local railway line. A plaque commemorates the 100th anniversary of bringing the railway to Zakopane. The initiator of the construction of the railway to Zakopane was Wladyslaw Zamoyski, a figure who rendered services to Zakopane in various fields, including the development of infrastructure and the protection of the Tatra nature. Coming back to the subject of the station - it was here that the legendary Luxtorpeda, which in the 1930s covered the Krakow-Zakopane route in 2 hours, ended its journey! Leaving the station and walking along Kościuszki Street, you easily reach the first attraction 📍 Równia Krupowa ⤵️.
🕚 8 min 🚶550 m
2.1 Krupowa Rówień Krupowa
This park in the heart of Zakopane is an oasis of tranquillity offering picturesque views. It was originally... a shepherd's meadow , used by local residents to graze their sheep. Over time, it became a favourite place for strolls, especially when Zakopane gained a reputation as a famous spa resort. Nowadays, Rówień Krupowa is still vibrant with festivals, concerts and fairs. Here you can admire the panorama of the Tatra Mountains with Giewont in the middle, and after a while move on to the famous Krupówki and enter an unusual museum📍ILUZJAPARK ZAKOPANE⤵️.
🕚 5 min 🚶350 m
2.2. ILLUSION PARK ZAKOPANE
A real treat for fans of optical puzzles! Exhibitions full of surprising installations engage the senses and imagination. Although the park is part of a network of museums that exist in other cities in Poland, it stands out for its unique mountain atmosphere and local attractions. Right next door, in a light stone building, is the headquarters of the Tatra Museum. If you want to learn about the history of the highlanders, this is the place for you! To reach the next attraction, we return to Krupówki, where we pass the Sanctuary of the Holy Family, the oldest brick church of Zakopane, on our right. After a few minutes we arrive at 📍Cemetery ofthe Deserved on Pęksowy Brzyzku⤵️.
🕚 11 min 🚶800 m
2.3 The Cemetery of the Order of Merit at Pęksowy Brzyzku
The name "Pęksowy Brzyzek" comes from the word "brzyzek", which means "hill" or "ridge" in the Podhale dialect. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in the region and plays a special role in history. Walking through it, you will pass the graves of many prominent figures connected with Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains. Among those buried here are Tytus Chałubiński - a doctor who popularised Zakopane as a health resort - and Stanisław Witkiewicz - the creator of the famous Zakopane style, examples of which we will admire during our walk.Right next to the cemetery is the wooden church of Our Lady of Częstochowa - often referred to as the "old church". Following the motto "Witkiewicz", we go to the nearby 📍Museum ofStyle Zakopiańskiego⤵️.
🕚 7 min 🚶450 m

2.4. Museum of Zakopane Style
The museum is located in Villa Koliba, and this is no coincidence. It was the first house in the Zakopane style designed by Stanislaw Witkiewicz himself. The artist, inspired by highland tradition, created a design that combines folk elements with modern (at the time) trends in architecture. Here you will see, among other things, beautifully carved furniture, applied art and woodcarving details. On your way to the next attraction, have a look at the villa "Atma", where Karol Szymanowski lived and worked. It is now a museum named after him. The wooden building, with its characteristic shingle roofs, carved features and wide porches, hosted many artists such as Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński and Jerzy Kossak in Szymanowski's time. Another highlight of our walk is the return to 📍Krupówki ⤵️
🕚 15 min 🚶1 km
2.5 Krupówki
You say Zakopane, you think Krupówki? No wonder, Krupówki, a bustling pedestrian street in the city centre, offers everything from grilled oscypek to souvenir stalls to premium brand boutiques. Although today Krupówki is a busy street, its name (a pasture belonging to the Krup family) is a reminder of Zakopane's highland past and agricultural character from before the tourist boom. In the second half of the 19th century, when Zakopane was developing as a health resort, Krupówki became the main road used by visitors coming to the town. From here we set off to the next attraction 📍Domto the Top of the Legs ⤵️
🕚 4 min 🚶300 m
2.6 The Upside Down House
It's a place that makes everything - literally - stand on its head! The house is turned 'upside down', meaning that the roof is at the bottom and the foundations are at the top. Both outside and inside, everything is designed in a way that completely confuses the senses. The floor is slightly sloping, causing visitors to lose their balance and get the feeling that something is 'wrong'. Leaving the world behind, you walk quite a long way along Zamoyski Street (yes, the one from the railway!) towards the Tatra Mountains. On the way, you will pass, among others, Villa Oksza - a gem of the Zakopane style, which today houses the 20th Century Art Gallery, a branch of the Tatra Museum. From here you can almost see our next attraction 📍LasChałubińskich⤵️
🕚 19 min 🚶1.2 km

2.7 Chałubiński Forest
This is a charming corner of Zakopane that combines natural beauty with historical significance. It is a real forest - the oldest and best preserved fragment of the mixed forest of the lower regiel in the entire Zakopane Basin, which once covered 90% of its area. The plot of land belongs to the Chałubiński family - descendants of the famous Tytus Chałubiński, physician, social activist and co-founder of the Tatra Society. Chałubiński is commemorated near the forest - there is a monument to him and Sabała (the bard of Podhale), which symbolises Chałubiński's friendship with the highlanders and his love for the Tatra Mountains. From here we set off to the nearby📍Nature EducationCentreTPN⤵️
🕚6 min 🚶350 m
2.8 TPN Nature Education Centre
This interactive educational centre will help you understand the uniqueness of the Tatra nature. Here you will see the largest model of the Tatra Mountains in Poland, with an area of as much as 50 m². Backlighting and interactive elements make it easy to get to know all the valleys, peaks and mountain trails in detail. In the centre, you will also watch 3D films where you can stand eye to eye with wild animals, admire the mountain scenery and learn about the protection of the Tatra nature. That's not all: there is a storm and cave simulator. This is a must-visit for anyone who wants to learn about the Tatras in a modern and accessible way! Turning back towards the centre of Zakopane, one last tasty attraction awaits us on the way📍MuseumOscypka⤵️.
🕚17 min 🚶1.4 km
2.9. Museum of Oscypek
The perfect end to a trip! This is a place where you will not only see but also... feel the tradition of highland cheese-making. The guides tell you how nomadic shepherds on the mountain pastures transform milk into cheese and how this process became an important part of Podhale culture. You'll learn what puciera is and how oscypek achieved the status of an EU-certified protected product. Best of all, a tasting session awaits you at the end to get a real taste of Podhale. You can finish your visit to the museum by buying some cheese - a perfect gift from Zakopane. After the museum visit, head back 📍dworzecPKP Zakopane
