2.1 Sagittarius Park

The name of the park alludes to the former functions of the place - the shooting competitions of the Sokol Gymnastic Society were held here, and today it is the green lungs of the city. 2.2 The market

This is the heart of the city and one of the largest market squares in Poland! It was laid out in 1292 and forms a chequered layout with streets and buildings diverging from it. The impressive town hall was built in the 19th century and still impresses today with its monumental architecture, while the surrounding townhouses create a unique atmosphere. Interesting facts: beneath the market square there are historic cellars which formerly served as merchants' warehouses, and the slab of the market square itself was used after the war as... a bus station. 2.3 The Royal Castle

The fortress was built in the 14th century by order of King Casimir the Great to protect the borders of the Polish Kingdom and the trade route to Hungary. In 1813, the Austrians blew up part of the castle to get stone to build a town. Unfortunately, in 1945 the destruction was completed by the explosion of a German ammunition depot, which was located within the castle walls. Although only fragments have survived to our times - the Blacksmith's Tower is the only remnant of the medieval fortress - the Royal Castle in Nowy Sącz is still one of the city's highlights and an important place on the map of history lovers. The former Synagogue, converted into an art gallery, is a remarkable landmark on the cultural map of the city. The synagogue was built in the 18th century and served the local Jewish community for over 200 years. During the German occupation it was looted and partially destroyed and later used as a warehouse. 2.5 St Margaret's Basilica - Sanctuary of the Transfiguration of the Lord

This monumental church towers over the surrounding area and is one of the most important religious monuments in the region. The first church on this site was built as early as the 13th century, and the present Gothic basilica dates from the 14th century. According to legend, Queen Jadwiga visited the temple and was said to have left her golden slipper there as a votive offering. The main altar houses the famous painting of the Transfiguration of Christ, which has attracted pilgrims for centuries and was crowned by Pope John Paul II. In 1992, on the 700th anniversary of Nowy Sącz, the church was elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica, greatly increasing its status.
