2. BIAŁYSTOK - WHAT TO SEE IN ONE DAY?
We start our journey at the main 📍railway station ofBialystok on the line that once connected Warsaw with St Petersburg. Interestingly, today the international railway line Warsaw - Bialystok - Vilnius - St Petersburg runs through Bialystok station. This is part of the so-called Rail Baltica, a trans-European transport corridor. Noteworthy is the station building, which has been renovated in recent years with respect for its historical architecture. From here we set off for the centre, on the way passing the impressive📍BasilicaMinor of St Roch ⤵️

2.1 Minor basilica of St Roch

If you see an unusual shape resembling a ship or a lighthouse on your way - know that you are there! The basilica was designed in the modernist style and its form symbolises the rebirth of Poland after independence. The church's soaring tower is a distinctive landmark on the map of Bialystok. The temple is dedicated to St Roch, the patron saint of travellers, and it is perhaps no coincidence that it was located near the station. To get an idea of the city's multi-faith character, we now set off to the📍SaintNicholas Church Cudotwórcy⤵️.

2.2 St Nicholas the Wonderworker Cathedral

Before reaching the temple, walking down Linden Street you pass the 'Journey' monument. Made of bronze, the sculpture depicts a huge wheel decorated with fairytale characters and theatrical photographs. It is a tribute to the rich puppetry tradition of Bialystok. St Nicholas Cathedral, which we soon come to, is the main Orthodox church of Bialystok and an example of beautiful church architecture from the mid-19th century. If you're wondering what churches looked like in the former Russian Empire, here's a perfect example! Inside the church , you are sure to be impressed by the iconostasis and rich decorations, including frescoes. Continuing along Lipowa Street, you reach 📍Kościuszko Square ⤵️.

2.4 Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Brick, a 2-tower façade, soaring towers and sharp arches are characteristic elements of the Vistula-Baltic Neo-Gothic style. This style was regarded in the second half of the 19th century as typically Polish, and building a temple in this style was considered a sign of patriotism. Interestingly, the temple also had a social function - during the heyday of the Branicki family estate, it was a venue for birthday and name-day celebrations of the hetmanstwo, during which... cannons were fired. Bypassing, temporarily, the Branickis' park, we go to📍GaleriaArsenał⤵️.
🕚 7 min 🚶550 m
2.5 Arsenal Gallery

The Arsenal Gallery is located in a former power station building, which gives it a unique atmosphere. The raw brick walls and high ceilings of the hall attract art lovers and enthusiasts of post-industrial exhibition spaces. In 1992, the creation of Collection II began. Today it is one of the most recognisable collections of contemporary art in Poland. It features works by artists such as Mirosław Bałka, Zbigniew Libera and Wilhelm Sasnal. Now back to the nearby park and📍PalaceBranickich⤵️

2.6 Branicki Palace

"Versailles of Podlasie" is one of the most beautiful baroque palace and garden complexes in Poland. The interiors of the palace present a rich and long history of the representatives of the Branicki family, among whom Jan Klemens Branicki deserves a special mention. The owner of... 12 towns, 257 villages and 17 palaces, a member of the Brotherhood of Enemies of Temperance, among others, field hetman of the crown and grand hetman of the crown. It was he who made sure that the palace was well known through constant new investments. Unfortunately, the residence suffered heavily over the centuries - it is enough to mention that after World War II, the palace survived... only 30%. It was rebuilt, reverting to its 18th century state. Visitors are also delighted by the French-style garden with its symmetrical paths, fountains and sculptures - the perfect place to relax after sightseeing. After the baroque ornaments, it's time for a bit of minimalist architecture - we go to see the📍Operaand Podlasie Philharmonic ⤵️
🕚 19 min 🚶1.3 km
2.7 Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra

The modern building of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic is the largest arts and culture centre in north-eastern Poland. Its architecture, combining glass and greenery, impresses with its simplicity and... may be somewhat reminiscent of the University Library building in Warsaw. The massing was designed by the same studio with the leading idea of extensive terraces overlooking the surrounding forests. You can visit the roof of the opera house, which functions as a garden. The last point on our tour is the📍Museum ofIllusions and Science ⤵️.
🕚 11 min 🚶800 m
2.8 Museum of Illusions and Science

An interesting addition to the list of places to see in Bialystok. This is a place full of unusual exhibits that stimulate the imagination and trick the senses. Interactive installations, holograms and rooms with optical effects attract both children and adults who want to feel like children. Here you can, among other things, paint with light and build mountains and rivers out of sand. It's a bit of magic at the end of our walk!
