Where is the socket on the Intercity train? | PolishTrains
Access to electricity when travelling by train is nowadays more than just a convenience - it is an absolute staple of modern travel. However, many passengers wonder where the power socket is on an Intercity train and whether it can also be used in 2nd class. It is good to know that, depending on the type of train set, the location of the sockets and their number can vary. We explain these details.
At a glance
At a glance
- Modern PKP Intercity electric multiple units including the Pendolino, Pesa Dart, and Flirt have a 230 V socket at every seat
- Some carriages also provide USB ports for charging phones and tablets
- Older TLK locomotive-hauled coaches do not have sockets and are being gradually phased out
- Seats at tables in open-plan carriages are the most reliable choice for passengers needing power
- The type of vehicle and socket availability can be verified in the connection details before purchasing a ticket
- Socket faults can be reported to the conductor during the journey or to PKP Intercity afterwards
The location of the socket on Intercity depends on the type of train
Wondering where the socket on an Intercity train is?Most often they are located directly next to the seats: between the seats, under the table or just above the armrest. In modern trainsets of the Pesa Dart (ED161), Newag Flirt (ED160) and Pendolino (ED250), each seat is equipped with an individual 230 V socket, and in some cars also with a USB port for charging a phone or tablet.
On older trainsets, the situation is slightly different - the number of sockets may be limited, or they may not be available. It is worth asking the conductor, who may be able to point out places with access to power. In sleeping cars and couchettes, sockets are located in every compartment, usually near the table or next to the bed.
Is there an outlet on Intercity? You already know that in most trainsets there is. According to PKP Intercity, the number of sockets depends on the type of vehicle and there are usually as many as there are seats.
In EZT (electric multiple unit) trainsets, this is as follows:
-
ED160 (Stadler Flirt): 354 or 360 seats
-
ED161 (PesaDart): 352 seats
-
ED250 (Pendolino): 402 seats
-
ED74 (Edith): 155 seats
For wagons, it also depends on the type of wagon:
-
a 2nd class compartmentless car has an average of about 76 seats, a 1st class 57.
-
A compartment carriage has an average of 60 seats regardless of class.
PKP Intercity's ambition is to have an electrical socket next to every seat and recliner. It is worth knowing, however, that sockets are not installed in coaches carrying TLK connections - less modern trainsets are to be gradually taken out of service.

Is there a socket in second class on PKP Intercity?
Is there or isn't there a socket on an Intercity second class train?
In the 2nd class of PKP Intercity trains, electric sockets are also available, and their availability is increasing with the modernisation of the rolling stock. The carrier wants passengers of both classes to travel in similar technological comfort.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that not all trainsets are yet equipped with sockets at every seat - in older cars, which still run on some routes, access to electricity is sometimes limited. The good news, however, is that PKP Intercity is gradually replacing older rolling stock with modern trainsets, so that every year more and more trains offer full access to power in both classes. Recently, PKP Intercity announced, for example, that it has placed an order worth 270 million PLN for the modernisation of a total of 40 vehicles, which will feature not only individual lighting, but also 230V and USB sockets for charging phones and laptops.
To make sure you have access to electricity during your journey to charge your ticketed smartphone or work on your computer, book a seat in a modern compartmentless carriage, for example at a table. Here you are sure to find an outlet right next to your seat. The best (because most comfortable!) way to buy your PKP Intercity ticket is via our PolishTrains service. Go to the Intecity timetable and choose the connection you are interested in!
Is there a Wars outlet on Intercity?
No - and what's more, PKP Intercity has no plans to equip catering carriages with electric sockets. Why not? They have a limited number of seats and are only intended for use by passengers during meal consumption. The possibility for more travellers to use the Wars company's services on a rotational basis is a priority for the carrier.
