POLREGIO - delays | PolishTrains
There are situations when even the best-planned journey can become complicated - the train does not arrive on time, you have to change trains or cancel the route. In the case of POLREGIO regional connections, delays are most often caused by reasons beyond the carrier's control, but passengers are not left without support. Find out where to check for current announcements about delays, what the typical reasons for disruptions are and in what situations you can apply for compensation.

Current POLREGIO train delays - where to check?
To avoid being surprised on the platform, it is worth knowing where to check the current status of a POLREGIO train. The carrier provides a website with a list of current delays, cancellations and obstructions on routes.
This information is updated and includes the approximate time of the delay, the train number, its route and, if possible, the reason for the disruption.
Electronic boards and voice announcements are also in place at many stations to provide information on delays and timetable changes. If in doubt, passengers can contact the POLREGIO helpline.
Some delays appear unexpectedly, others are the result of planned infrastructure works. Therefore, it is worthwhile to monitor the status of connections on an ongoing basis, especially during periods of increased traffic or unfavourable weather conditions. If an unexpected obstacle occurs, passengers are not left on their own - the carrier usually provides a substitute bus which can continue the journey without additional charges.
The most common causes of delays
Although POLREGIO maintains punctuality at a stable level, delays in rail traffic happen for various reasons. They are mainly due to infrastructure and weather factors, but also to situations that arise suddenly and require a service response. Below you will find the most common sources of delays.
Modernisation works and track renovations
The biggest impact on punctuality comes from upgrades carried out by the infrastructure manager. These are necessary works to improve the quality of journeys, but during them there are often speed restrictions, single-track traffic or temporary detours. As a result, some trains may arrive at their destination several minutes late, especially on longer routes.
Weather and atmospheric conditions
Weather phenomena are another important group of causes. Strong winds, snowstorms, icy conditions or violent storms can lead to damage to the overhead line or force speed restrictions on entire sections. In winter and during intense weather events, the risk of delays clearly increases.
Incidents at level crossings
Collisions and vehicle breakdowns at level crossings occur less frequently, but have a significant impact on traffic flow. Even a short-lived track blockage can delay several consecutive trains, as resuming traffic requires securing the scene and the intervention of the relevant services.
Locomotive and wagon failures
Technical faults are another cause of delays. Problems with the locomotive, doors, installation or on-board systems may require a short stop or the substitution of another train. Although POLREGIO is modernising its rolling stock, it is not always possible to replace a train immediately in every region.
Traffic organisation and station load
Organisational factors also influence delays. Railway junctions can be heavily congested, especially at peak times and during seasonal departures. The need to change track, rearrange trains or carry out longer technical manoeuvres can lengthen waiting times and affect the punctuality of subsequent journeys.
Passenger behaviour
The smallest, but still noticeable group of causes are passenger-related situations. Boarding for too long, blocking doors or safety interventions can delay a departure by up to a few minutes. In busy periods - during holidays, holidays or festivals - such delays are easily transferred to subsequent trains.
POLREGIO - compensation for delays
The possibility to be compensated depends primarily on the type of train. Although many passengers assume that they are always entitled to reimbursement after exceeding 60 minutes, in practice the rules are more complex. In Poland, there is a national exemption for urban, suburban and regional trains, and most of POLREGIO's connections fall into these categories. This means that ordinary REGIO passenger trains are not covered by the compensation system for delays.
The situation is different for selected long-distance connections run by the carrier, such as interREGIO (IR). It is these routes that are excluded from the general exemption and may be subject to EU compensation rules. In practice, this means that compensation is only available if the delay of a train eligible for the scheme was at least 60 minutes and the passenger has a valid ticket and submits a request within 12 months.
The passenger can either submit a request for compensation or a request for compensation to repair the damage caused by the train delay. In both cases, the procedure is simple - an application form is available on the carrier's website and can be submitted electronically or on paper. As for the amount of compensation, it depends on the length of the delay:
- between 60 and 119 minutes, the compensation is 25% of the single ticket price,
- more than 120 minutes, 50% of the single fare.
However, please note that compensation is only paid if the sum exceeds the equivalent of €4.
Tickets bought through PolishTrains - key rules on delays and cancellations
For tickets purchased through PolishTrains, the complaint procedures depend on the situation. If the passenger has cancelled the journey due to a significant delay, he/she must obtain a certificate of cancellation from the ticket office or service counter - this is necessary to further claim a refund. If the trip did not take place through the fault of the carrier or the passenger had to change connections, the claim is submitted on the passenger's behalf by PolishTrains.
On the other hand, if the journey was made by a delayed train, the passenger shall lodge a claim directly with the carrier himself, as only he can consider such a claim. Likewise, if you wish to make a complaint about the conditions of your journey - such comments are always made directly to the carrier, regardless of where the ticket was purchased.
