What do the new PKP carriages look like? Comfort and modernity in every class

PKP Intercity's new carriages are not only state-of-the-art, but above all they offer exceptional comfort and travel safety. This is because they are equipped with all amenities, including:

  • air-conditioning and noise dampening;

  • a widely available WiFi network, USB chargers and 230 V sockets; individual lighting;

  • a dedicated luggage area;

  • a passenger information system with screens and current information displayed on them.

Travelling in such an equipped carriage makes it possible to fully relax, but also to work if necessary. PKP Intercity is also aiming to reduce the number of seats in compartment carriages - there will be six seats in a compartment, instead of eight as before. However, compartmentless carriages, which are a more comfortable option for many travellers, are and will continue to appear on most routes.

Both the modernised and the new Intercity coaches have a classic layout with seats optimised for non-combustibility standards. In addition, the refurbished 32 carriages of the Z1B series are homologated for speeds as high as 200 km/h.

New PKP trains - an investment in the future of rail travel in Poland

PKP Intercity plans to upgrade and modernise its entire fleet by 2030. PKP's new trains are homologated not only for domestic but also international services. The investment amounts to more than PLN 16 billion and is financed, among other things, by European Union funds. At the same time, it is also the largest rolling stock programme in the history of the Polish carrier.

Thanks to these financial outlays and the replacement of obsolete rolling stock with new ones, rail travel in Poland will be fast, comfortable and safe. This is because the new carriages must meet restrictive standards in order to be admitted to traffic. They are also fully adapted to people with disabilities and the youngest passengers.

According to estimates, 78.5 million passengers will travel on PKP Intercity trains in 2024. In 2025, this figure could rise to more than 83.5 million passengers, and forecasts for 2023 predict an even greater increase of 110 million passengers a year. This only confirms that modernisations and new purchases are prompting people to change trains, and that modern trainsets are the answer to the real growing demand for the use of public transport services.
