Grudziądz tourist attractions - what is worth seeing?
Grudziądz delights from the first glance - especially when looking at its characteristic panorama from above the Vistula River. This city with a rich history is full of unique attractions that you won't find anywhere else. Defensive granaries, Teutonic traces, city walls and tranquil boulevards - this is an unusual mix that draws you in and encourages you to explore further. If you are wondering what to see here, this guide will lead you through the most interesting places. Which Grudziądz attractions are worth a look?
The Abbots' Palace
Just a few steps away from the market square (on Wodna and Spichrzowa Streets) is the small but extremely elegant Abbesses' Palace - the former residence of the Benedictine Prioress, built in the second half of the 18th century. This late Baroque building may interest you for its architecture: a symmetrical façade with decorative cornices and a characteristic mansard roof. The palace is currently one of the branches of the Rev. Dr Władysław Łęga Museum and houses a permanent exhibition of paintings and artistic crafts. The interiors, recreated with attention to historical detail, allow you to move back in time and feel the atmosphere of bourgeois life at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It really is worth it!
Klimek Tower
Although the original castle tower known as 'Klimek' was blown up by the Germans in 1945, its symbolic significance has survived. In 2014, the construction of a modern viewing tower was completed on Castle Hill (9 Zamkowa Street), which recreates the former silhouette and today serves as a terrace with a panoramic view of the entire city, the Vistula River valley and the surrounding forests. The tower is as high as 23 metres and is accessible free of charge. This type of attraction in Grudziądz is a great walking point for families with children and others. It is especially worth coming here at golden hour - the view of Grudziądz's red roofs and the Vistula bend is breathtaking!

Granaries on the Vistula River - a symbol of Grudziądz
The granaries on the Vistula River in Grudziądz form one of the most characteristic panoramas in Poland. They used to serve a double function - as storage and defence. Their monumental facades on the river side reach up to 5-6 storeys, and on the city side - 2-3 storeys. The difference in ground levels creates a truly remarkable architectural effect. Today, some of the granaries serve as museums and exhibitions, while others are admired from the outside during walks along the Vistula. This is a must-see place for anyone who wants to feel the spirit of Grudziądz's commercial and military past!
Grudziądz Fortress
Are you visiting Grudziądz? The sights you mustn't miss on your trip include the extensive fortress complex from the 18th and 19th centuries at 3 Czwartaków St. It is one of the largest of its kind in Poland! The Citadel was built by the Prussians as part of their defence against Russia and is still impressive in scale today - it includes bastions, earth ramparts, casemates and numerous ancillary structures. Today, the Citadel remains a military facility (several smaller units are stationed there), but there is also something for tourists to enjoy - a hiking and cycling trail was created here in 2007, leading to the most important fortifications. The military allows visitors to explore parts of the fortifications, but only under the supervision of an authorised guide - contact the site to arrange an organised visit.
Water Gate and city walls
The Water Gate is the only surviving town gate in Grudziądz - and one of very few in Poland. Built in Mannerist style in the 17th century, it was part of the city's former defensive walls and led from the market square directly to the waterfront. Today, it is a beautiful vantage point and part of an atmospheric walking route along the medieval walls. Walking along this route, you can feel the atmosphere of the old centuries - especially in the evening, when the walls and gate are moodily illuminated. It makes a perfect space for family walks and a dream backdrop for photos of the city.
The Rev. Dr. Władysław Łęga Museum
The largest museum institution in Grudziądz is located in the historic granaries and monastery building (address: 3/5 Wodna Street, less than 2 km from the railway station). It has rich archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic collections related to the history of the region and the city itself. Particularly interesting is the exhibition on the history of Grudziądz, including the Teutonic and Prussian periods, as well as temporary exhibitions that change regularly. Educational workshops and museum games have also been prepared for families.
Bronisław Malinowski Boulevards on the Vistula River
Stretching along the river, the boulevards are one of Grudziądz's best-loved recreational spots. Named after the famous Olympian who came from Grudziądz, they provide an excellent space for walks, cycling, rollerblading or picnics overlooking the river and granaries. There are also playgrounds, benches, cafés and refreshments. In summer, there are outdoor events and concerts, and in winter the place is quiet and peaceful. At any time of the year, the boulevards are ideal for walks with stops enjoying memorable views!

The Higher Vocational School building

One example is the building of the former Höher Realschule, located at 22 Sienkiewicza St. This neo-Gothic building from the 19th century, built of red brick, was once one of the most important secondary schools in East Prussia. The building has retained its original character - with a representative façade and large windows. Today, it houses the Fourth High School, but it is also worth looking at the building from the perspective of 19th century educational architecture and the long tradition of teaching in Grudziądz.
Former water tower on Góra Zamkowa (Castle Hill)
The distinctive brick tower from the end of the 19th century is an element of the former water supply infrastructure that has been given new life. It is located on the site of the former Teutonic Castle and has recently been used as a viewing tower - after revitalisation it has been opened to the public, and from its top there is a magnificent view of the Vistula Valley, the old town and the surrounding area. This technical monument has a utilitarian function, but also considerable tourist potential. Find out for yourself by visiting Grudziądz.
