PKP Sosnowiec – Katowice. Train timetable

The short but important connection between Sosnowiec and Katowice is one of the most frequently chosen by passengers travelling around the Upper Silesian–Zagłębie Metropolis. Every day, dozens of trains of various categories run between these cities – from fast Pendolino services, through comfortable IC connections, to regional lines. It is a convenient option both for people commuting to work or university, and for travellers changing in Katowice onto long-distance trains.

Trains depart from Sosnowiec Główny station to Katowice practically every fifteen minutes or so. The first morning service starts at 4:40 and arrives in Katowice at 4:59. This is an ideal option for those starting their day early and needing a quick journey to the centre of the Silesian province capital. In the following hours, numerous services are available with short journey times – on average from 14 to 19 minutes, performed mainly by Intercity trains. These types of connections depart at, among others, 7:57, 8:35, 10:34, 11:29, 14:29, 16:06 or 20:04.

Also worthy of note are the fast EIP Pendolino trains, which offer the same route without changes in approximately 14–15 minutes. These types of connections are available at, among others, 9:51, 12:53, 14:55, 18:53 and 20:53. Pendolino is an option chosen by those expecting the highest standard of travel.

Connections with changes are also available, though they are significantly longer – lasting from around one and a half to even four hours. For example, the 9:46 service from Sosnowiec to Katowice operated by three REG trains takes as long as 3 hours and 47 minutes. Such options are, however, rarely chosen, mainly in emergency situations or when direct connections are limited.

The cost of a ticket depends on the chosen train category. For most IC connections, travel in second class costs PLN 19, whilst a seat in first class is PLN 29. For Pendolino connections prices are higher – a second class ticket costs PLN 56, and first class PLN 93. The difference in price results from the higher standard of services.

For those using REG connections with changes, the second class ticket price is usually PLN 20–35. It is worth remembering, however, that despite the lower price, the journey time is significantly longer. Tickets can be purchased online with the ability to select a specific seat in the coach. Additional options are also available, such as SMS ticket or departure reminder. The sales system is transparent and allows quick comparison of all available services.

The route from Sosnowiec to Katowice is direct and requires no changes. Trains depart from Sosnowiec Główny station, located in the city centre proper. For most services, trains pass without stopping at other stations, heading straight to Katowice. The distance between these cities is approximately 9 kilometres, and the route runs through a heavily urbanised area. Due to the short journey time and high frequency of connections, this route is treated as an urban metropolitan line.

Some regional connections may include additional stops – particularly on longer destination routes. Trains then stop, among others, at: Bukowno, Jaworzno Szczakowa, Mysłowice. For regional connections, passengers may start their journey at: Sosnowiec Główny, Sosnowiec Południowy, Sosnowiec Dańdówka, Sosnowiec Porąbka or Sosnowiec Kazimierz and end it at: Katowice Szopienice Południowe, Katowice Zawodzie or Katowice.
